*If you've never written a sketch before, then send us a funny scene or short script or even just some ideas for sketches- we just wanna see how you write and what your sense of humor is!

We will be performing on BACKYARD BRAWL this Friday night at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre!

Auditions 2010!

Are you interested in being a part of NYU's sketch comedy group? HammerkatzNYU is looking to bring on a new group of writer/performers this year, and we are holding auditions on Friday September 10th and Saturday September 11th. NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY. It'll be fun!

The audition process has two parts:

1. A performance audition. This is very laid back and you don't need to prepare anything. You will be cold-reading a couple sketches that we provide.

WHEN:

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 10TH at 6pm

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 11TH at 6pm. (you only need to come to one night)

WHERE: Both audition dates will take place on the 8th floor of Kimmel.

(note: the performance audition could take a few hours, so consider bringing something to entertain yourself while you wait)

2. A writing submission. Your writing sample can include a sketch you have written, a page of ideas for sketch premises, or some kind of mixture of both.

HOW TO SUBMIT A WRITING SAMPLE: Please e-mail your writing sample to hammerkatznyu@gmail.com before midnight on Friday, September 10^th.

We realize that some people are more interested in performing than writing and some people are more interested in writing than performing. We would still like everyone to complete both parts of the audition.

Again, no experience is necessary. It's gonna be a lot of fun and a great way to meet other people interested in comedy on campus. Auditions are open to students in any school at NYU. Please don't hesitate to e-mail us with any questions you might have before auditions.

And for non-audition-related news: our next all-new, all-free sketch show will be on Saturday September 25th on the 8th floor of Kimmel.

We're going to be defending our title this Friday at UCB's Backyard Brawl against a brand new challenger, Inside Joke Films.

Backyard Brawl is a monthly sketch comedy competition where each group performs 3 sketches and the audience votes on their favorite group, who gets to come back next month. We've won the past two battles thanks to YOUR love and support, and we'd love to see you there again.

IT'S TIME TO AUDITION FOR HAMMERKATZ SKETCH COMEDY

Everything you should need to know about the auditions SHOULD be all here in this post. We hope everyone comes to check it out!

We will be bringing on a group of writer/performers, if you want to write for Hammerkatz but don't want to perform, please come to the audition and let us know you'd rather be a writer. If you want to be a performer, we will still be asking for a writing submission, however, we will take that into account.

Two things are required for the audition. One, we are asking for a writing submission from everyone. This writing submission (which should be comedy) can be anything ranging from as little as two one line sketch premises, or as much as 5 pages of scripted material. We're really looking at the basic ideas of what is submitted which is why we're happy to accept simple one line premises, however, if you've written before, we'd love to see a sample of your best stuff... just please try to limit it to five pages. Please either bring this to the audition, or email it whenever you're ready to hammerkatznyu@gmail.com.

The second part of the audition will be a performance audition. It will be a cold reading of two old sketches, you'll have some time to familiarize yourself with the sketches before the audition.

During the weekend following Friday, September 19th, we will be holding a fast round of callbacks and will be immediately bringing people onto the group by the following week.

Hammerkatz NYU is back already. Yes, we just finished a show, but we really really like sketch comedy, so we're doing another all new show on APRIL 7TH AT 9 PM AND 11 PM ON THE 8TH FLOOR OF KIMMEL! Although Silver can be a fun place to be, too many people really don't want to remember that class I took.

We at Hammerkatz thought of something that might be fun, take any random line of dialogue from a sketch and try to find a way to make it fit in real life. Example from March show, "You guys are lucky, there's a unicorn being raped across town." Choose your own in the April show.

Also, feel free to create as many facebook groups as possible about specific lines of dialogue from our sketches.

Montessori

Today in my performance art practicum (and yes, it's just as the title suggests), we had to think of a story when we first realized that boys and girls were "different." I was thinking about my childhood and the progressive Montessori preschool I attended, when I suddenly remembered the way the bathrooms were set up: boys and girls did their business in the same bathroom. Not only that, but there were no partitions on the toilets. So for a straight year, I watched every single one of my peers go wee wee. I would literally be sitting on the pot next to my guy friend taking a piss, and we'd just be chatting it up about Ninja Turtles. Looking back, the Tisch student in me is like, "Oh! Awesome! They were raising us in an embarassment-free atmosphere," but the more logical part in me wonders, "How was Montessori not sued?" and "Did this greatly affect/traumatize me in any way?" I don't remember getting to kindergarten and having trouble adapting to the sudden privacy of the "little girl's room," so I can rest assured that, traumatizing or not, my progressive preschool didn't hinder me from adapting to the more regular rules of society.

So...can I watch you take a piss?

It's been a long time coming, but music has just hit me. Somewhere between David Bowie, Gorillaz, Beck, Pink Floyd, The Pixies, Pavement, and the Gnarles Barkely song I just listened to twice, it's boiled over. A friend told me he was thinking about starting a band, and I respectfully told him that I couldn't possibly play bass for him. Maybe I should try. I don't have much to lose except the respect of my peers, and that's easily replaced by a decent bottle of wine, right? Well, now all I need to figure out is how to learn the bass again. This sounds like a long term failure.

The English language is redundant. Why is there a need to capitalize letters and have periods? We need to get rid of capitalization for most words. This pointless task is wasting so much of our increasingly important lives. The excessive capitalization of letters which do not need to be capitalized (we'll refer to it as TECOLWDNNTBC for short) takes up three minutes of the average college student's life every year! Don't ask how I figured that out, bit it was accomplished with the help of some excruciatingly difficult calculus. Oh, I did notice that I capitalized the acronym back there, which leads me to another point. TECOLWDNNTBC does not include the exclusion of capitalization for all words.
List of simple corrections and clarifications:
1. The beginning of a new paragraph will not need capitalization because the indent already assures the reader knowledge of a new paragraph.
2. The beginning of a new sentence will not need capitalization because the period denotes the end of the previous sentence already.
3. Acronyms shall remain capitalized so as not to confuse them with words that are simply misspelled.
4. Proper nouns such as Mary and Tennessee will remain capitalized, but not if that proper noun is the name of an animal. We aren't capitalizing sheep, why should we have to capitalize Dolly? (This rule excludes Lamb Chops and Rocky the flying squirrel). No, fuck you green peace.
5. The pronoun "I" will be capitalized. Not capitalizing "I" does not make you a poet. It only makes you look retarded.

That's pretty simple, huh. There is a lot more of our modern language which is horribly redundant, so we should also just add the word "smurf" in whenever we plan to be redundant. Using these new rules for the Contemporary Smurf's English, I will now translate the following:

Jim and Susan went to the store. They bought a bottle of milk, some thumbtacks, and a brush for their pet dog, Snuffles. I like Snuffles.

Jim and Susan went to the store. smurf bought a smurf of milk, some smurfs, and a smurf for their smurf dog, snuffles. I smurffed snuffles.

Look, I don't claim to be the next Einstein. I don't want to be the next, big thing. There's too much pressure. I ain't no philistine, though. Should philistine be capitalized? Whatever, so take this little bit with a grain of salt, or at least some sympathy.
It's gotten to the point where I've read enough about art and have been exposed to enough of it to kind of know what's up. I've been to the Louvre. I saw Anselm Kiefer's special exhibit in Montreal. I've even seen a performance artist tie pigeons to his over exaggerated paper mache penis and let them fly off with it, but never have I felt so righteous as I did at this moment.
Last Sunday, I'm blowing some time at the Met since I was uptown anyway after eating breakfast with my aunt. I'm standing in front of a priceless Chagall work. It was one of the ones where he's floating around some dream like Paris making out with his wife. Then it just came out, "Fuck you Marc Chagall." A little old lady to my right gave a little gasp and put her hand to her mouth. I didn't stick around to see what kind of look was on her face. It wasn't worth it.
It was the most outrageous claim of my life, well, the most ridiculous insult I've ever heard come out of my mouth, and it was only the beginning. The next thing I know, all I'm thinking is:
"Come on Rembrandt, lighten up a little. What the hell Goya? Could you just take a freakin' chill pill. Christ! Picasso, don't you get me started. Okay, I get it, the dying bull's got some huge balls. Yeah, yeah, I get it. Really though, it'd be nice if you just sketch some kitschy smiley face. You pompous bastard. Not everything has to be so fucking deep. Stop being the arrogant genius you are for five damn minutes. Oh, and you. You mother fucker Chagall. Maybe you should paint something that doesn't defy the laws of physics. You think you can do that?"
It was kind of soothing to let that all off my chest.
ON A LIGHTER NOTE
Am I the only one who likes going to the New School libraries. I love them! They're great! Not only do I get to spend some time outside with the super cool art kids and talk about how cool all of our jackets and scarves are, but I also get to see how super cool it is to stand around outside and beg for smokes. Plus the libraries are always empty, at all times of the day! And on a side note, their librarians are a bunch of little hotties. Nothing like those tubby guys at our library. They look like they live in the basement of Bobst and have never been exposed to anything in their life except a seven o'clock shadow.

Well, I figured it was about time for Sime to do a good ol' fashioned music post, doncha think?
I think so. Here we go!

I was at the always reliable Other Music today with some friends from Cornell (that school with the...gorges) and I got a good recommendation from one of them for this cd:

It's actually a four song ep called Farewell Forest by Telepathe.
If you're into Gang Gang Dance and Animal Collective, you might wannt to check them out. They're actually on the same label as Gang Gang Dance. The label is The Social Registry.
The friend that made the recommendation also said that pretty much every band on that label now is quite good.
I suggest you check out their website here and see for yourself. They have plenty of mp3s from all the bands. I suggest you check out The Telepathe song they have there and also the band Psychic Ills. They're pretty rockin too.
And if you haven't heard Gang Gang Dance, give them a listen while you're there.

So we have it on good authority that some people showed up to Silver Center last Friday night looking for a HKATZNYU show that wasn't there. We were forced to postpone the show 'till THIS SATURDAY the 25th, in Silver 703, 9 and 11 PM. We're deeply sorry if you were one of those people who came on Friday...HKATZNYU owes you some ice cream . Come up after the show on Saturday and be like, "Dude, update your website...and buy me some ice cream." And we'll make that happen forthwith.

Speaking of ice cream, Donald Glover, Dominic Dierkes and myself are gonna be doing improv with NYU alums THE WICKED WICKED HAMMERKATZ on Friday night at Red Room at 10:30. The show is called "Drunken Ice Cream Social," and you get free ice cream and a free shot (if you're, y'know, of age) with your five dollar admission. Jhyeah! It should be a blast.

End of Semester Woes: Busywork Ahoy!

So for this entire semester, I have been interning for school credit at a production company. More specifically, i have been doing clerical work for Scott Rudin Productions (filing, photocopying, running errands, etc). So, in an effort to somehow be sure we're learning something, NYU mandates that we write a paper at the end of the semester detailing what we've learned during our internship. I don't like that. I share with you now my final semester paper in its entirety. I hope i get an A!

Internship: What I Learned; A Compendium for the Curious (As Well As Other Stories, Triumphs, and Feats of Strength)

Scott Rudin's office is not a place for the faint of heart. The moment I arrived at his doorstep as innocent as a newborn babe, I was thrust into the breakneck intensity of the production world. I was imbued with responsibilities not often delegated to one of my tender age. With the strength, stamina, and begrudging patience of Atlas, I shouldered this load with my newly acquired powers. I discovered that, with concentration, I could tap deep into my soul and unlock hidden reserves of titan-like strength and agility I never knew I had. I quickly jumped into action! I stood in the center of the office with my arms outstretched and proclaimed, "I am Matt! No more, no less! Your tedium is over, for I am here to assist you in any way you can imagine! If you need me, I'll be PLAYING SOLITARE IN THE BACK!" My edict was met with stares of bewilderment and ringing phones, but mostly with silence. As I scanned the room for a friendly face of acknowledgement, I saw a look of terror wash over one of the assistants' faces. I quickly turned to see Scott Rudin himself standing in the doorway of his office. He was beet red, and his breath seemed to reverberate off the walls, its force peeling paint along the way. My outburst, it seems, had interrupted his meeting with the future director of Jarhead II: The Vacuum of Space. He charged at me like a mother rhino protecting her children. The top of his head connected with my gut, lifting me off my feet and tossing me 15 feet across the room with a mighty head-butt. Circling me slowly, he baited me to engage him. In a flash of clarity that I am usually not privy to in my everyday life, I saw the situation with open eyes. This was a test. He wanted me to prove my mettle. It was necessary that I show him I was a survivor, worthy to work in his office. Grabbing two of the office landline phones, I nimbly detached the handsets from the base units and, connecting them with a shared phone wire, constructed a set of makeshift nunchucks (or as the Japanese say, nunchaku). He was obviously dazzled by my prowess with the weapon, as his eyes glazed over with fear and regret as I approached him. The whirling phone-nunchuck was only a ruse though. With a flick, I tossed the item away mid-whip. He watched it soar gracefully through the air, carving a path like a sparrow in the nighttime sky. Seeing him distracted, I began a slow trot towards him that evolved into a rush, and then, a savage charge. Flinging myself parallel to the ground, I drop kicked him in the chest and heard a crack as I shattered his sternum and ribcage. The kick sent Scott Rudin, one of the most powerful producers in our nation, out into the open air 10 stories above the ground enveloped in a shower of glass. He didn't scream once. "Scotttttttttt!!!" I yelled, reaching for his hand. As he descended from the arc of his trajectory out of his office window, I saw a look of newfound respect in his eyes. He held eye contact with me for the entire beautiful moment before he disappeared below the horizon of the window ledge. Gasping for breath, and with the adrenaline still making my blood play a pumping, drumming beat in my ears, I slowly looked around the office with tears in my eyes. The silence felt like an eternity. My shaking hands made me feel cheap, easily broken. I was positive I was not the warrior he wanted. Then, one of the assistants stood up. He began to slowly clap as a smile crept across his face. This clap turned into a dozen more, and a dozen more after that as other workers stood to offer a thunderous tidal wave of applause. Utterly spent, I collapsed and was nursed to sleep by the hottest employee at the company. I slept fitfully for 3 days. On the fourth day, I awoke with a start, and went to the office. Scott Rudin, apparently, was totally fine. Don't ask me how. He smiled at me like nothing happened. After that first day, things were pretty much uneventful around the office.

I have yet to receive an angry email from my advisor regarding my paper. I hope that means i learned alot this year.

The chant is speeding up to indicate their increasing level of seriousness.

Since DC is doing some music posts I think I'll folow in his freshly made footsteps and do a little post about music now.

First off, DC isn't kidding about Jose Gonzalez. That man is phenomenal. I bought his cd today, along with two others.

The other two cds I purchased at Other Music (where else?) were Recording a Tape the Colour of the Light by Bell Orchestre and Awesomer by Blood on the Wall.

Both albums are top notch. Bell Orchestre is a band that includes a couple or a few members of the Arcade Fire. How would I describe them? Well, it's instrumental "post rock". It's quite beautiful. They're serene at times, and cinematic, and joyful, and droney, and autumn. Very autumn.

Now, Blood on the Wall is a different experience. They're just an...awesome rock band
with a female singer, but she shares singing duties with the guitarist. They're from this wonderful city as well, so...I suggest you check 'em out.

indie covers of the college dropout

Stereogum points us to some mp3s of indie bands covering songs of Ye's "The College Dropout." "Through The Wire" rapes the tempo of one of my favorite songs of ever and makes it into the freaky shout-y girl-band twitch I don't usually like unless it's Le Tigre ('cause their drums are sick.) They go back to the original tempo for the hook, and you're like, "I wish they'd done the whole thing this way." Then there's "Last Call," which is a lot better: they get kind of a dub thing going. But mostly it just makes me wish I was listening to the original. Anyway. If it gets cute indie girls listening unironically to Kanye then I suppose it's all for the best. Fun times; go listen.

Something I didn't know until just now: brillz comedian/close personal friend of Hammerkatz/NYU alum Aziz Ansari has a role in the new Todd Phillips/Scot Armstrong movie, says this item on his blog (Armstrong + Phillips did "Road Trip," "Old School"). That's so cool! I like that in one fell swoop, a Stern graduate has acheived more in show business than ninety-nine percent of Tisch graduates ever will. (Full disclosure: I will someday be a Tisch graduate.) (Tears.)

Are you in town this weekend? You ought to come see myself, Dominic, and Donald do three-person improv at the UCB's 3v3 Improv Cagematch semifinals, and vote for us. You can show up at eight, pay five bucks, and watch hilarious longform improv competition 'till the tourney concludes at like 12:30. Also the beer is real cheap (two dollar Rheingold, three dollar Bud). We are cute as shit and what else are you doing?

alsooooooo i saw "walk the line" and knowing very little about johnny cash beforehand thought it was a great flick - reese did a lovely job, much better than i expected, and mr. phoenix sure learned how to be on drugs for extended periods of time. british boys? no. feelings - check.

lauren sowa is a total girl

So HKATZNYU's Lauren (also a Weinstein RA) and I are Netflix buddies. I just discovered that this allows you to see the last seven or so DVDs "recently watched" by your Netflix buddy, as well as what they've just returned, what they've enjoyed, and what they've just placed on their queue. And after reviewing Lauren's info, I have come to one unshakable conclusion. Lauren Sowa is, in fact, a girl.

The last eight or so movies Lauren has watched have been stuffy costume dramas, most often featuring Kenneth Branagh/Colin Firth/Ralph Fiennes, some of them featuring dangerous Branagh/Firth/Fiennes cocktails. Emma Thompson is also in FULL BRITISH EFFECT. When not actually Shakespeare adaptations, Lauren's movies are adaptations of plays about Shakespeare's works ("Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead"). Lauren has rated highly a great number of "Sex & The City" DVDs.

So there you have it: Lauren Sowa Is A Girl Who Likes Things That Girls Like, Like British People and Feelings. The debate is over. The results are in.

I hope Lauren will keep being my Netflix buddy after I outed her as a Girl. In fact, I invite her to air my dirty Netflix laundry in public. I am sure she will find me to be nothing less than a gentleman of refined and ecclectic taste in cinema.

Long time y'all, too long. When I'd load this page, I got tired of looking at the Arcade Fire, as every hipster must. First things fuckin' last:

The Astor Place cube is back! To paraphrase Jay Z, "yea ma, the cube is back/tell the whole world the truth is back." They took it away "for cleaning" in the springtime and I think most of us assumed it was gone forevs. We were wrong. I walked into the balls-cold of late afternoon and found it in the midst of traffic as though it had never left! So exciting. For those of you who weren't around when it went away: you can push it and it rotates. Easier if you get a team of German tourists to help you. Try it today! Bully for public art that does not suck!

I don't have a whole lotta mp3s for you but the legendary Justin Purnell of UCB theater fame has a fuckton of new hotness in this post. A Spoon remix, a track from this new Happy Bullets band I like quite a bit, some tracks from Sime's project-chick Cat Power (including an Oasis cover!), depressed hip-hop classic "What's Up Fatlip," and not one but TWO versions of one of my all time favorite songs, "Ceremony" (originally Joy Division, covered so well by Galaxie 500.) Check it.

I'm going to be maxing and relaxing with free beer at a UCBT party this evening, if anyone would like to join me. Come one, come all. Should jump off around midnight after the Cracked Out Wedding.

You know your practice French oral exam isn't off too a good start when you walk in and your Dutch teacher says, "yeah, so, uh, vatz ze deel, alex?" Then the Irish grad student echoes, "Yeah, soatsthedeelalex" (you know, in that melodic Irish sort of way.)
I have something to admit. My name is Alex and I am a horrible French student. I don't deny it. I could blame that French teacher in High School we made cry, but that was just because she was fresh out of the peace core and not used to students who could look her in the eye, much less a bunch of rowdy rich kids from the suburbs. I didn't really make her cry. It mostly these two seniors who constantly showed up drunk to the class, since it was conveniently just after lunch. I think one of those two goes to A.A. now. The other works at Baskin Robbins.
No, I never studied. I don't study, now, unless there is a huge assignment due tomorrow or an exam in five hours. But, today, I made flash cards and planned ahead to visit that freaky Dutch lady during office hours. I suppose I have to since they're going all out during the strike and having class at some loser poetry cafe. Yeah, fuck that. I'm not going to learn any French at that place.
Sorry this wasn't funny in any way, shape, or form. I'm not going to apologize again.
p.s.-who wants to get together with me and pitch ideas back and forth. I have a great concept with breast cancer, but I can't seem to put it together.

Here is a link to a trailer for me and Dom's thesis film Checkout, which stars a lot of Hammerkatz members and alums.

It was created without our permission by our publicity firm and It seems as though they've put all of their resources toward promoting only action movies from now on, so they decided to take the ad campaign for our film in a direction that neither Dom, Meggie, or myself would have ever thought possible.

For those who havent seen the movie and know nothing about it. this trailer is an abomination, the real film is is just a straight up character driven comedy and these fuckers perverted our vision, and stole a line from the x-files teaser......
